Culture and History of Azabu-juban

Azabu-juban's cultural identity comes from the unusually close integration of an established shopping district with an international residential community. The wider Azabu area developed from the Edo period through a mixture of temples, samurai estates and merchant neighborhoods, and elements of that history remain visible in long-established restaurants, confectioners and community events. The Azabu-juban Shopping Street also publishes local-history features such as material on Azabu-juban's past and present. The broader Azabu, Minami-Azabu and Moto-Azabu area has long contained foreign embassies and international residents, reflected today in multilingual services and a diverse dining culture. Modern towers and the urban culture of Roppongi stand close to narrow lanes, slopes, temples and older storefronts, so the character of the neighborhood can change considerably within only a few blocks. Walking beyond the station toward Moto-Azabu and Higashi-Azabu gives a fuller picture of how the area developed.
