Around Takanawa Gateway: Tokyo's New Urban Gateway Where History Meets Redevelopment

Takanawa Gateway Station opened on March 14, 2020, serving the JR Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines. Its surroundings are being transformed by TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY, JR East's largest urban-development project. By 2026, the district includes a growing concentration of retail, offices, hotels, residences, medical facilities, cultural venues and educational functions. West of the station are the established neighborhoods and temples of Takanawa, including Sengakuji and the remains of the historic Takanawa Okido gateway. To the east lies the modern Konan and Shinagawa business district. The area also preserves sections of the Takanawa Embankment, constructed offshore for Japan's first railway in 1872 and rediscovered during redevelopment. Although the immediate station area has a distinctly futuristic appearance, traditional residential streets and temple districts are only about a ten-minute walk away. Residents can also make practical use of Takanawa Gateway, Sengakuji and Shinagawa stations, making the district attractive to central Tokyo commuters, international business residents and families.
