Culture and History Around Aoyama-itchome

Aoyama-itchome provides a useful view of Tokyo's modern urban development. Meiji Jingu Gaien lies north of the station, while the Akasaka Imperial Estate is nearby toward Moto-akasaka. Along Aoyama-dori, offices, commerce, design and fashion-related activities developed strongly in the postwar period, forming the eastern side of the broader Aoyama cultural corridor extending toward Omotesando. Sports and cultural facilities and the tree-lined landscape of Meiji Jingu Gaien have long been local landmarks. At the same time, corporate headquarters and contemporary office architecture dominate much of the immediate station area, creating a close juxtaposition between historic green spaces and modern city development. Redevelopment projects, particularly around Jingu Gaien, mean that parts of this landscape will continue to change. Walking through Gaien, Kita-aoyama, Minami-aoyama and Moto-akasaka provides a fuller understanding than viewing the station frontage alone.
