Culture and History of Akasaka-mitsuke

The name Akasaka-mitsuke preserves an important element of Edo history. Mitsuke referred to defensive gates and guard points associated with the outer defenses of Edo Castle, and this area occupied a strategically important position west of the castle. Minato City's history of local place names explains that much of Akasaka consisted of samurai estates during the Edo period. It also records how communities connected with present-day Moto-Akasaka were relocated as Edo Castle expanded and the gate system was established. After the Meiji Restoration, Akasaka's proximity to Japan's political institutions helped stimulate commercial growth. Organized commercial activity along Hitotsugi-dori dates back to the mid-Meiji period. Broadcasting and entertainment industries later increased the area's association with politicians, officials and performers. Today historical slopes, shrines and old neighborhood memories coexist with modern offices, hotels and restaurant streets.
