Culture, History and the Waterfront Role of Takeshiba

Takeshiba has long served as part of the Port of Tokyo and as a maritime gateway linking central Tokyo with the Izu and other Tokyo islands. Passenger traffic around the Takeshiba terminal continues to give the district a working-port identity. More recently, WATERS takeshiba has added a major performing-arts role through the JR East Shiki Theatres Haru and Aki and the Jiyu Theatre. Tokyo Portcity Takeshiba contributes the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center Hamamatsucho-kan, Port Hall and Port Studio, supporting exhibitions, conferences, events and content production. Takeshiba's cultural identity therefore comes less from a dense collection of preserved historic buildings and more from the intersection of maritime travel, theater, events, digital-content industries and the waterfront. Walking toward Hamamatsucho, Kyu-Shiba-rikyu and Hamarikyu also connects the district with gardens and urban history dating back to the Edo period.
