Culture and History around Shiodome

Shiodome is an important site in Japanese railway history. When Japan's first railway opened between Shimbashi and Yokohama in 1872, the original Shimbashi terminal stood in what is now Higashi-Shimbashi. The Old Shimbashi Station complex now reconstructs the exterior of the historic station and contains a railway history exhibition room at 1-5-3 Higashi-Shimbashi. As of September 2026, it is advertised as open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with free admission. Beneath Caretta Shiodome, the Ad Museum Tokyo presents a permanent exhibition on the history of Japanese advertising, temporary exhibitions featuring domestic and international advertising awards and themes, and a specialist library. Its September 2026 schedule lists opening from Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6:00 p.m., with free admission. Together with nearby Hamarikyu Gardens, the district allows visitors to encounter Edo-period landscape history, Meiji-era railway modernization and contemporary advertising and media culture within one walkable area.
