Overview and Character of Shiodome

Shiodome Station is in Higashi-Shimbashi 1-chome, Minato City, and is served by both the Toei Oedo Line and Yurikamome. The surrounding district was created through one of central Tokyo's major redevelopment projects on the former Shiodome freight-yard site. The redevelopment covers roughly 31 hectares and consists of 11 blocks containing offices, commercial facilities, cultural uses and housing. Today's streetscape is characterized by high-rise towers, pedestrian decks, underground passages and plazas, with continuous connections toward Shimbashi Station. Major facilities include Shiodome City Center and Caretta Shiodome, while the Italian Town area lies to the south and Hamarikyu Gardens to the east. Weekdays bring a large office-worker population, while weekends add visitors to gardens, cultural venues and restaurants. Housing consists largely of high-rise apartments in and around Higashi-Shimbashi and toward Hamamatsucho. The close juxtaposition of modern towers, a historic garden and the birthplace of Japanese railway history gives Shiodome a distinctive urban character.
