Culture and History of Nogizaka

The National Art Center, Tokyo is the defining cultural institution of Nogizaka. Opened on January 21, 2007, at 7-22-2 Roppongi, it is directly connected to Nogizaka Station Exit 6. Unlike a conventional museum centered on a permanent collection, it operates as an art center using one of Japan's largest exhibition spaces for special exhibitions, open-call exhibitions and educational programs. North of the station, Nogino Park and the former Nogi residence preserve a contrasting layer of Meiji-period history associated with General Nogi Maresuke. The former house and brick stable remain on the site. As a result, Nogizaka brings together contemporary museum architecture, the wider cultural scene of Roppongi and historical buildings from the modern era within a compact walking area. This combination gives the neighborhood a particularly strong identity for residents interested in art and culture.
